Sejak kapan mulai mengoleksi plat

sejak 1992, begitu pindah ke australia untuk sekolah kelas 1 sma.

Kenapa plat

pindah dari koleksi kaset ke koleksi plat itu seperti pindah dari biasa nonton di laptop terus nonton di bioskop. good vinyl covers are just beautiful, apalagi yang double-fold, seperti pavement’s wowee zowee. atau yang ada fancy detailsnya, seperti actual zippers on the rolling stones’s sticky finger, or the sliding door cover on some girls. semua detil desain jauh lebih kelihatan, seperti tanduk-tanduk setan di sampul slayer’s reign in blood.

ratusan tapi ga pernah dihitung. i used to be obsessive about records, but not obsessive compulsive. koleksi yg sekarang juga sudah di-cull biar lebih gampang pindah dari australia balik ke jakarta dan juga karena dengan sengaja ingin membuang records yang tidak pernah benar2 saya dengarkan.

Koleksinya dari mana saja

berbagai macam record stores, second-hand and new, mail-order. mencuri jg pernah, single sex pistols holiday in the sun dari uni market. flea markets. jalan surabaya. mengemis punya orang tua teman. menemukan satu box penuh old black sabbath records di flat sewaan di sydney.

Belinya sekarang dimana sih?

mail order/online. kaskus. jalan surabaya yang udah overpriced dan koleksinya sdh habis diborong david tarigan dan dj2 ibukota circa 2004. ak.sa. reus. harga plat2 tety kadi, titiek sandhora, etc cuman 7rb-10rd di tahun 2000, pas 2004 apalagi setelah parc buka, ada monday mayhem, bisa jadi 100rb lebih!

Harganya berapa

macem2. dari $1 di bargain bins sampai priceless kata mastercard buat yg collectibles. personally i dont give a shit about collectibility (anymore). or limited editions, coloured vinyls, bla bla. heavy vinyls (180 gr) i like though. they seem to sound better than thin krupuk udang RCA ones. Koleksi paling valuable, why

paling valuable yg merepresent a special time in my life, both happy and depressing. i love my morrissey’s education in reverse album bukan karena titelnya misprint dari versi australia viva hate, tp karena lirik2nya yang sentimental merepresentasikan hampir sempurna sentimentalisme (hidup) saya waktu sering mendengarkan album itu. waktu itu saya tinggal di sydney, kota yg desperate untuk dianggap multicultural tapi masih sempat ada race riot di tahun 2005. di situ sebagai orang indonesia saya merasa diterima, bisa makan ayam goreng 99 setiap hari kalau mau, tapi tetap saja hidup itu sedih dan susah. makanya lirik lagu bengali in platforms, yang membuat morrissey sempat dituduh rasis/a nazi, malah menyentuh banget buat saya. “life is hard enough when you belong here.” yeah! life is hard enough everywhere!

i also love my sandi shaw hello angel album almost for the same reason. morrissey wrote some of the songs in this album, reviving sandie shaw’s washed-up 60s starlet career. (habis itu sih tenggelam lagi wakakak.) none better than “please help the cause against loneliness”, the best song morrissey never officially released.

saya juga suka banget album the dwarves, blood guts & pussy. all the songs in this album seem to tell the story of the first year when i moved back from sydney to jakarta: back seat of my car, let’s fuck, drug store, fuck you up and get high, etc. even the album title, blood guts & pussy!

Cerita menarik selama mengoleksi (mis : rebutan dengan kolektor lain, koleksi lama ditawar orang dengan harga tinggi, belinya di luar negeri, hilang dicolong maling, dll)

kebanyakan plat saya memang belinya di luar negeri.

mencari/beli plat is never interesting, its actually always boring. browing through endless dusty stacks of the same records youve seen so many times just in the faint hope you find say, frank zappa’s weasels ripped my flesh in its original pressing. pret. id rather fuck you up and get high anytime!

Perawatan

vinyls actually really tough. you buy a cd, it gets scratched, thats it. vinyl scratches just make the vinyl crackles a bit, sometimes jumps. audiophiles call that character. ive seen a jalan surabaya vendor cleans his vinyl with rinso-ed water and a hard brush! that was when i asked if i can get a cleaner copy of nomo koeswoyo’s solo album “no koes”, album yg dia buat gara2 ngambek dikeluarin dari koes bersaudara.

istri bagaimana, keberatan atau mendukung, why. pernah punya cerita seru dengan istri soal hobi mengoleksi ini?

unlike other people i actually marry someone i like. so no, my wife likes playing my records. she has her own favorites (currently curtis counce) and im not precious with my records so she can scratch em all she likes. even my 18-month old daughter loves listening to my records. her current fave is the b-52’s debut album, side two, especially there’s a moon in the sky (called the moon). haha, that IS a classic children’s non-sequitur!

Plat yang lagi dipengenin banget saat ini, why

the magnetic fields – 69 love songs. a box set with all the original liner notes/booklet. the original cd boxset had 3 cds with 23 songs on each cd. this is a bit lopsided, 69 songs on six 10” vinyls. still i want it bad. i love the album, which i bought online in 2000 from cdnow. i put in a glowing review of it in a+, which i was editing at the same time, to no effect hahaha. i want it even more now since i cant afford it!
